Gigs!!

I've got a busy 3 weekends of gigs coming up in September:

10th Sept - Editors in Birmingham
19th Sept - Coldplay @ Wembley
26th Sept - Tim Minchin in Birmingham
plus
16th Oct - Editors in Manchester
and the possibility of seeing them in London for a Q Magazine gig on the 7th Sept (just gotta get my name pulled out of the hat).

Anyone else got anything coming up gigwise?

That's all so far for this year.

Before any of you comment on the ridiculous amount of ADO gigs I am attending over the next couple of months, let me just explain that I am actually one third of their Street Team and so I'm required to attend as many gigs as is humanly possible. :)

  • August is pretty quiet for me, just got Twilight Sad tomorrow, Sons of Noel & Adrian on the 12th, Broken Records on the 17th and Duke Special on the 31st.
Then the beginning of September gets a bit crazy...
    3rd The Dodos
    5th David Ford
    8th The Acorn
    9th Herman Dune
    10th Loney, Dear
    11-13th End of the Road
    14th Okkervil River

also, I am ridiculously excited about going to see Pixies in October!! :D

  • When I see Editors in Manchester, they are being supported by Joy Formidable and Wintersleep.. But should you know something about the one-off Brum gig... then you must spill the beans..

    :P

  • Last week was busy (well for me it was), I met up with John G and some of his Arcade Fire forum buddies at the Bell Orchestre gig at Relentless Garage in Islington, which was fantastic. They were supported by the brilliant Dan Smith, who I hadn't heard before but it was armed with loops and pedals and was very good; and The Luyas which is another of Pietro (Amato - Bell Orchestre)'s band, and I enjoyed their set too.

And the following day, I travelled up to Birmingham to see the mighty Editors at the opening night of the very fancy and brand new O2 Academy.. Such an amazing night, and despite almost getting squashed to death down the front at the barrier and struggling to breathe due to the aforementioned squashing and jumping up and down during songs, both me and my friend decided that it was one of the best gigs we'd ever been. An amazing setlist containing the majority, if not all of their forthcoming 3rd album, 'In This Light And On This Evening', which was evenly mixed with anthems from the first two albums ('An End Has A Start', 'Munich', 'Bones', 'The Racing Rats', 'Smokers Outside...', 'Blood', Fingers In The Factories' etc etc plus the equally as awesome 'You Are Fading').. They were supported by The Northwestern, which features the former frontman of Hope Of The States, I was very impressed with them; and Bombay Bicycle Club, which wasn't really my cuppa tea, my friend however loved 'em.

This Saturday is Coldplay @ Wembley day, so I am very excited about that. I just hope my foot is healed in time.

  • I've had a quiet couple of months gigwise, it picks up this week though.

Most of them are on here http://www.last.fm/user/Desriche/events

  • Hey Laura...
The new songs by editors.. anything like the old stuff of more like papillion when it comes to the sound and feel of the songs?

    • Hiya Patrick.

'Papillon' is representative of what you will hear from the new album, but don't let it put you off. Its all good stuff and the tracks sound amazing live.

I do believe they will be touring mainland Europe soon, will you be going?

  • I went to Wembley last night to see Coldplay, and they were incredible.. The whole damn show from White Lies through Girls Aloud and Jay-Z to the HEAVVVVVVY rain shower that started mere minutes before Coldplay took to the stage and lasted nearly half an hour, the whole experience was awesome.. Finished at 11pm, me and my friend finally got out of the carpark at midnight, and I got home at half one this morning, with a massive grin plastered across my face.

  • @Laura Nope, presale started while i was lying on the beach in the Turkish sun.. sold out! Can buy tickets online but i will end up paying double and i told myself i am not going to.. so no editors for me at this point. Will listen to the album anyway. The new one is getting better as i often hear it on the radio.. Did see them twice last year, the last one was an extra show .. also the last one of their tour.. was amazing and a small venue ('t paard in Den Haag).

Tuesday i get to see broken records :) Looking forward to that!

  • OKkkk. so not much of an extensive update... But my current social / gig calender is as below:

    * Tues 6th Oct - Recording of Never Mind The Buzzcocks - WOOP!

    * Thurs 15th Oct - There's a Music Photography Masterclass taking place at the British Music Exhibition at the O2, sounds interesting.

    * Fri 16th Oct - Editors @ Manchester Academy

    * Monday 26th Oct - Guillemots are taking part at a British Council gig at the Barbican, they will be collaborating with the guy from Penguin Cafe Orchestra.. And Matthew Herbert is headlining the night. I'm really looking forward to it, as since their tour finished at the end of November, they had about 4 or 5 months off and are now in the studio working on album #3, so I can't wait to see them!!

    * Thurs 5th Nov - Broken Records @ Bush Hall

    * Fri 27th Nov - Snow Patrol @ Manchester Palace Theatre.

  • very very VERY excited about seeing Pixies on Tuesday!

& then next week I've got Sparrow & the Workshop, Maybeshewill and The Cribs on consecutive nights

  • Hmmm S&TW is on the 13th isn't it, Becca?

  • I shall see what I can do!!

  • So not really on topic... but wanted to share.. editors.. donwloaded new album.. skipped every song after a minute.. deleted it from the hard drive..
The positive side is that i don't have tickets to see them.. the downside is.. i've lost a band. Oh wait.. i have the BR and aehas. pfew..

  • I've heard the album live twice now, and have listened to the album in full about 6 times, and I love it. To be fair, it isn't THAT much of a departure, and giving a song, only a minute isn't really giving it much of a chance.. In some cases, a minute is still only the intro, or only in the first verse without even getting to the chorus. I'd say don't put it down til you've actually taken the time to sit down and listen to the whole thing completely.

Their gig at Manchester on Friday, was awesome, I was right up on the barrier in the centre, I got crushed to bits, I'm surprised I have ribs left to be honest, I could barely move at the end. The new songs are fitting in nicely with the old ones, the crowds are always electric and everyone is singing and bouncing along to the new tracks as they would with 'Munich' or 'Smokers...'; 'Papillon', 'Bricks & Mortar', 'The Big Exit' and 'Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool' all particularly went down a storm and sound awesome live!

  • got tickets for pavement this morning!! :D

  • I'm on a bit of an high Editors high this past week, and it was increased by the news that Editors are going back out on tour in the UK in March 2010, and in a rare occurence, they will be bringing that tour to my home county of Kent and will be playing Folkestone's Leas Cliff Hall, which will be amazing, and then they play Brixton the next day so I have tickets to both. I can't wait!!

  • Midlake in Cambridge & London booked today
2010 is looking like it's going to be a good year

  • I saw my beloved Guillemots perform live for just 15 mins on Monday night at the awesome Barbican. It was for the British Council's 75th Anniversary and it was an even to celebrate their work with the British Arts (or something along those lines).

Anyway, the first half of the show featured 3 collaborations, and for this, Guillemots teamed up with the mighty Penguin Cafe Orchestra. They performed 3 tracks: the PCO's classic 'Telephone & Rubber Band', a rare live performance of the Guillemots b-side 'Woody Brown River' before finishing with a lullaby which began life as a poem written by their drummer Greig for his young daughter.

The headline act on the night was the awesome sampling / orchestra composing / stage dancing maestro that is Matthew Herbert with his big band. I had only seen one clip of one his gigs and I was impressed by what I saw from that and was very much looking forward to seeing him too. When I got to the Barbican, I bumped into Guillemots' manager Ed who said that the night should be interesting and that Matthew Herbert had a 100 piece choir with him, it turned out he had the 75-piece Goldsmiths Vocal Ensemble accompanying him for one night only, and they were incredible. EVERY BAND SHOULD HAVE A MASSIVE CHOIR ONSTAGE WITH THEM!!

  • On Halloween afternoon, it was announced that the awesomely talented Fyfe and Magrao of my beloved Guillemots had (the afternoon before) been invited to join the cult legend Daniel Johnston onstage for a few tracks during his 2 London shows, at Bloomsbury Ballroom that evening and Monday night at Union Chapel. There was a chance that Fyfe would get a chance to perform a few solo tracks on the night too, and having missed his only solo-album live performance to date at Glasto, I was a bit determined not to miss these. Union Chapel was sold out but BB was listed as 'pay on the door', so I jumped on the train up to London and managed to get in. I spoke to both Magrao (who is a BIG fan of Daniel) and to Fyfe who said that he wouldn't be doing his solo stuff after all but may be on Monday. Was really cool to see them both onstage again. I spent the whole of Sunday thinking of ways to get into Mondays sold-out gig, I sent a few emails to try and call in a few favours, however those were unable to help, luckily someone came to my rescue and I got in. Both seemed a lot happier on the night than they did on Saturday, Fyfe played piano rather than guitar, which is always an honour to hear.

All in all, a lovely spot of spontaneous gig-going.

  • HONESTLY? I really couldn't get along with their music all that much. I found it a little bit meh in places. BUT I thought they did marvellous accompanying Daniel, they really rocked it, just wish they brought that to their own songs!

  • Warchild gig that I was going to next Saturday has been cancelled, but booked my tickets this morning for a week of Fyfe Dangerfield gig goodness. His album is out the week of my birthday, he's play 4 gigs, I'm going to 3 of them including London Scala which is actually on my birthday!! WOOP WOOP!!

  • CURRENT GIG LINE-UP:

27th Nov (Lunchtime) - A little album launch soiree in London
27th Nov (evening) - Snow Patrol @ Manchester Palace Theatre
18th Jan - Fyfe Dangerfield in Birrrrrmingham
19th Jan - Fyfe Danferfield in Manchester
21st Jan (MY BIRTHDAY) - Fyfe Dangerfield @ London Scala
23rd March - Editors @ Folkestone Leas Cliff Hall
    24rd March - Editors @ London Brixton
1st May - Peter Kay @ Manchester MEN

    PLUS Glastonbury and Latitude.

Lots of cool things coming up..

  • Not much to add to my list, only 1 gig, but I'm super excited about it nonetheless. I managed to get a ticket (seated but thats OK) to see the Swell Season (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova) at Shepherds Bush Empire on next Thurs (14th).

    **happy face**

Have you and the boys been to any gigs lately Andrew? And when can we expect you back in London town?

  • Andy hasn't been to any gigs, he's not allowed out.

I went to see Beach House at King Tut's in Glasgow last week and they were pretty fantastic. I wish I could sing like Victoria LeGrand. In fact, I wish I could sing full stop.

    Gill

  • Andy's not allowed out at all? That's not very nice Gill... ;-)

Haha, I wish I could sing too. So that makes two of us.

Rather spontaneously, I am now off to Brixton tomorrow night, to see Vampire Weekend. My friend has accidently double-booked herself, and had two tickets to sell, so I've taken them off her hands, NOW I'm trying to find someone to come along with me. Unfortunately, announcing that I have a spare ticket on FB, doesn't appear to have caused ANY stir, amongst the ranks.. Grrr, you just can't help some people.

I was delighted by this mornings announcement that Kings of Leon will be playing Hyde Park, keeping my fingers crossed that I manage to get myself a ticket to that..

I saw in one of the blogs recently posted, that you boys are gonna be in London for meetings at the embassy. I am due to go to London that day to meet up with a friend in town for work, we was hoping to go to a gig, but I couldn't find anything listed, so if you could bring your stuff, and announce a last minute gig somewhere, THAT would be greatly appreciated!

  • I booked myself a little holiday to the States around a Midlake gig in Milwaukee on my birthday. I may be a teensy bit Midlake obsessed right now.

    • WOW. I wish I could book lil holidays to the States. Am jealous.

I am hoping at some point to organise a visit to Canada at some point, probably around a gig. My cousin lives in Ontario, both she and her hubby used to be in bands, so they are both up for gigging whilst I'm out there. Hopefully a small visit to New York would be fitted in too. YAY.

  • First post, wooh! Hi laura.

My intentions, student loan depending of course (Yes, this is what i spend your taxes on!)

20/04 - Laura Marling, York Grand Opera House
15/05 - Built To Spill, Leeds Academy
17/05 - Brian Jonestown Massacre, Manchester Academy
    15/09 - Wilco, Newcastle Academy

And hopefully some more Leeds stuff here and there.

  • Welcome to the forum blue_dark.

I remember the good old days of getting student loans and being able to afford gigs! We're through in Glasgow recording when Built to Spill are playing here with Dinosaur Jr so there's a slim chance I'll get to see that tour too

    Gill

  • I'm on the guestlist (thanks to my awesome rep at the label supplier) for Sparrow & The Workshop's gig at Charlotte Street Blues in London next Thursday.

Its replacing a gig they were due to play at Water Rats on the 1st, and is a gig that the label is putting on to celebrate the great year they've had so far.. Lots of media due to be there I am told. Should be good.

Also hoping to see Villagers on the Wednesday, and have tickets for Mt. Desolation on the Friday (3 gigs in 3 days - BUSY)

Glasto in just over 3 1/2 weeks now, the time has come around quickly. Latitude is 2 1/2 weeks later, and have somehow managed to get myself a 2nd row ticket (I never manage to get tickets that close when its seated) to see Tired Pony (Snow Patrol, REM) at London Forum the night before I travel to Suffolk...

    BUSY BUSY!

  • OK, bit of an update.. Got a fairly awesome 2nd half of the year coming up!

    * Arcade Fire @ Hackney Empire - 7th July (in the presale - OMG)
    * Tired Pony @ London Forum - 14th July
    * Latitude - 15th - 18th July
    * Villagers @ Old Vic Tunnels - Thurs 5th Aug
    * Fyfe Dangerfield @ Manchester Sound Control - Thurs 16th Sept
    * Fyfe Dangerfield @ London Sheps Bush - Tues 21st Sept
    * Fyfe Dangerfield @ Brum HMV Forum - Sat 25th Sept
    * Mumford & Sons - London Hamm Apollo - Sat 9th Oct
    * Sparrow & The Workshop - London Borderline - Tues 12th Oct

Hoping to get tickets to see The Irrepressibles at London Scala. I would love to see them! Someone I kinda know is in the group, and I only heard about them when I saw her at a gig the other week and she told me about her band, after I noticed she had her viola and I asked about her day.
