'Must listen to this' thread

In the spirit of sharing and expending all our musical horizons, what can you recommend that falls into the 'must listen to if you have not before' category?  And why?

I'd highly recommend:
Yo La Tengo - 'And then nothing turned itself inside-out' - one of the most gentle, beautiful albums ever

* Apologies to those who replied already, due to 'human error' there was an issue with this topic *

  • watch out for 'unit shifter', the debut album by Un-named Commercial Project, coming soon !!

  • I think all should listen to "the national".. check them out on youtube.. the song that got me into them was fake empire, the David Letterman live performance..

    • I am so jealous of everyone who is going to see The National with Broken Records supporting this August. I was too late to get tickets :(

In terms of new albums - Riceboy Sleeps (Jonsí from Sigur Rós' side project) have an album out this month. It's bound to be breathtakingly beautiful.

  • My fave album EVER = Guillemots' 'Through The Windowpane'. Amazing band, amazing people, amazing album!!

    I'd recommend it to everyone!!

  • revere.

one of my very favourite bands i think. kinda similar to broken records but not quite... some of the same influences i'd guess, but taken somewhere else? i dunno. jolly good though.

the national & guillemots, yes. very much so. both marvellous.

  • are you going to see Revere tonight Ryan?

Before the 'human error' I had recommended Blue Roses

    great debut album :)

  • i did indeed, were you there as well?

they played a blinder i thought.

  • Manchester Orchestra.

American band, don't really sound anything like Broken Records except for the fact that they're amazing.

  • I recommend listening to Tom Fun Orchestra (Orchestras must be very "in" at the moment!) They aren't really an orchestra but rather a 9 headed gang of Canadian gypsies. Like Gogol Bordello only better.

  • For Tom Fun Orchestra you should check out Jock Mooney who did the video. http://www.jockmooney.com/

  • Ah yes I know Alasdair who directed it with him. Very good stuff indeed.

  • Talking of orchestras, the Derek Trucks Band are so together it's amazing there's no conductor :-)
They played a gig in Glasgow earlier this month, and I felt really lucky to be there.

Derek Trucks is my new guitar hero, and there are several radio sessions around the web to listen to.

  • I'm also here to recommend Guillemots. As well as the beautiful "Through The Windowpane" (as recommended above by Laura), I'd like to recommend their second album "Red". It's that rare and wonderful beast of an album - one consisting of very different songs of which all of them are good (and some are brilliant).

    • It is indeed a wonderful album.. It's TTWP's louder sister, with some epic glam dancefloor tunes, all with their signature strings (see 'Kriss Kross' for e.g.). With other highlights including 'Clarion', 'Last Kiss' (a song made for the catwalk), 'Cockateels' and 'Don't Look Down'!!!

  • I can't stop listening to the Bowerbirds 'Hyms For A Dark Horse'. It's one of the best things i've heard in ages. Also Chad VanGaalen's 'Soft Airplane', great album!

  • OK, I was talking to Emz (sorry for suddenly disappearing, my sister came home and kicked me off the comp) at the time I discovered the music of this band.. Well actually, I first heard about them via NME during the week, and then remembered to check them out today...

The band = Dead Man's Bones, this is the actor Ryan Gosling's band, well its a duo he formed with his mate Zack, and they sound amazing. They aren't your regular 'Hollywood Actor turns Musician' kinda band, these are actually good.

Here is their myspace page:www.myspace.com/deadmansbones where there are currently two live tracks; however, you should also check out the footage here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGakxDyjwzc of 'In The Room Where You Sleep', which I listened to 3 times in the space of 10 mins and fell in LOVE with immediately, check out the amazing childrens choir they have with them (something to do with Flea from RHCP). Its wriggled its way into my head, and I can't see that it will leave anytime soon. LISTEN AND WATCH IMMEDIATELY!! :D

  • I finally got around to hearing the Mumford & Sons album yesterday.. I'm seeing a friend on Friday and I asked if there was anything she wanted from work (I work for an online music store), and she asked for this.. I wanted to hear it for myself, so stuck it on my headphones when it arrived yesterday and fell in love upon my first listen!! Its incredible...

  • I'm going to suggest Dan Mangan (after all, who can resist a song with the refrain 'robots need love too, they want to be loved by you')

  • I know Emz will agree with me on this one, but after having wanted to watch it for ages, I finally sat down last Friday (SNOW DAY) and watched the film 'Once'.. I know what you're saying "This is a thread for albums, Laura", but what I was gonna say is that, the sound track is FLIPPING AMAZING. Glen Hansard (The Frames) and his Swell Season cohort Marketa Irglova are in the lead roles in the film, so the soundtracks is filled up with their amazing music.

EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH THE FILM, and then buy the album!!
