Edinburgh bands

What's happening in Edinburgh these days, I hear loads of bands mentioned here and there, is there really a bit of a scene developing? Perhaps some hope and inspiration that talent lurks within is all that any city requires get something happening. I'm sure that the Festival plays a major part in the city's calender but the local band scene should nudge it's way in there for a bit of the action.

  • A Day Overdue!!!

A Day Overdue is a 5-piece pop punk band based in Edinburgh in early 2009. Having been together just 4 months, the band have developed at lightning pace, having written and released an EP on iTunes, supported My Passion on the Edinburgh leg of their Kerrang sponsored tour, and made a number of fans and new friends all across Scotland. The rest of the year looks to be very promising, with a new EP on the way entitled "Heroes And Villains" and shows already booked in a number of cities across the UK.

Formed completely through online advertising, the band members hail from four different cities yet they all share the same ambition and drive to succeed. Each member brings different skills and musical tastes to the table, giving the band's music a recogniseable yet diverse sound. Drawing influence from a range of bands including Blink 182, Guns N' Roses, Joy Division, Funeral For A Friend and Arcade Fire, the songs appeal to fans of many different genres, allowing vocalist Rob Walker's unique style to captivate the listener instantly.

So what makes A Day Overdue different?

First and foremost ther band genuinely encapsulates what is exciting and raw about any of the biggest bands in Britain today, whilst their back story represents a triumph for internet music and new media. Five guys from five different towns in Scotland answered an online advert to create a musical quintet and each song absorbs influences from the members’ diverse tastes. They write songs over the internet ahead of practice sessions, with chief song writer Dan Morrison sending ideas to lyricist Rob Walker and after a mere evening's work new tunes are born, with infectious melodies riding over the waves of a pulsing and dynamic backing track.

On live shows, four good-looking talented musicians stand behind a singer who embodies every nuance of the classic rock frontman. He’s sharp, his stage-banter is flawless and he’s a bloody talented vocalist.

To categorise A Day Overdue's music, you could say punk, emo, rock, indie or even pop but the truth is you couldn’t fiund a shelf in which to stack their sound. With a shy and retiring drummer who listens to heavy metal, a quiet, intelligent bassist who is in love with Joy Division and a mouthy guitarist who emulates REM and Radiohead – all before you factor in a song writing duo that digests all influences and emits something completely new and unique - A Day Overdue combine genre busting guitar riffs and driving melodies that just make you want to sing. Fun, clever, and easy to dance to, the band’s anthemic and upbeat choruses push forward to support lyrics portraying heartache and hedonism in equal measure. A Day Overdue has turned indie, disco, ballads, rock and punk into post-modern monsters using synthesizers and effects to encompass fans of all artistic direction.

Singer Rob is the cousin of Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics but the boys have steered clear of making that phone call and want to establish themselves under their own steam, forging success without ties.

The ingredients are there; good looking members, unique tunes and signature branding of all merchandise in typical overstated A Day Overdue colours that has won plaudits from Myspace members and promoters. The group transcends the musical and style genres to create a whole package which is dynamic, fresh, and very slick. Bigger than life and a lot of fun, they have a loyal and ever growing fan-base gathered using Myspace and regularly meet up with the friendlier ones on gig nights. Despite their unsigned status, they have managed to pack renowned venues in Edinburgh and Glasgow and even get recognized on the bus - obviously the calling card of any successful musician.

All production and promotion is self-financed and done in-house. With an outstanding five track EP already under their belts and another already written, with a little industry help the boys have the potential to take the UK music scene by storm. Their plans for the future of the band are massive and they possess the work ethic to go along with the talent.

Watch out for A Day Overdue.

"Catchy little f***ers... a lot of thought has gone into this band... fantastic."

"One of Edinburgh's best kept secrets, the music of punky guitarpop five-piece A Day Overdue is best explained in this gorgeous quasi-anthem about harbouring angst, love and resentment but with some of the bounciest beats and tempo changes around. In short this is one catchy-arse tune..."

  • I went to the launch of Jesus H Foxx's new EP "Matter" at The Bowery last night. I'd previously seen them at the Sick Kids' charity gig earlier in the year, and was very glad to go and see them again.
Good to see most of Broken Records at the gig too :-)

The EP is special and not like anything else out there; maybe some Talking Heads influence but mostly sounding very individual (and not at all like BR).
    Good artwork and packaging too.
